  19. ABOUT THE DEMO VERSION OF IGOR PRO 3.01
  20. --------------------------------------
  21. This demo version of IGOR Pro is limited in several ways:
  22. • Files cannot be saved.
  23. • Experiments cannot be saved.
  24. • The clipboard contents cannot be transferred to other programs.
  25. • The printing output is lightly over-printed with
  26.   "IGOR Pro/IGOR Pro/IGOR Pro" and is slower as a result.
  27. • Only a few IGOR extensions, examples, help files, and extra procedure
  28.   files are included.

  30. ABOUT IGOR PRO 3.01
  31. ------------------
  32. IGOR Pro is an interactive environment for experimentation with
  33. scientific and engineering data and for the production of
  34. publication-quality graphs and page layouts. 
  35.  
  36. Here are the main strong points of IGOR Pro:
  37.  
  38.   IGOR Pro produces journal-quality scientific graphs.
  39.   IGOR Pro handles large data sets very quickly.
  40.   IGOR Pro includes a wide range of capabilites for analysis and graphing.
  41.   IGOR Pro has special support for time-series or other evenly-spaced data.
  42.   IGOR Pro imports data in many formats, and acquires data from GPIB
  43.            and the serial port.
  44.   IGOR Pro is completely programmable via a built-in programming environment,
  45.            and can be extended by external code written in C.
  46.   IGOR Pro doesn't require any programming; most functionality is available
  47.            using standard Macintosh menus, dialogs, and the mouse.

  49. IGOR Pro produces graphics that you would be proud to publish: IGOR prints
  50. at the full resolution of the printer and exports high-resolution graphics
  51. formats such as Encapulated PostScript (EPS).
  52.  
  53. IGOR Pro allows multiple data sets of any length to be displayed in any
  54. number of graphs and tables. IGOR is very fast and excels at handling
  55. large data sets (more than 100,000 points, for example). String data and
  56. numeric data in 8 internal formats and up to four dimensions are supported.

  58. In graphs, each curve has its own color, line size, and style. Line
  59. color, marker size, and marker shape (or marker text) for each point
  60. on a curve can be set by values in another data set. Any number of
  61. curves, axes, annotations, contour curves, pictures, or images may be
  62. displayed in a graph. Category plots and error bars are fully
  63. supported. It is easy to zoom in and pan around a graph. Graphs have
  64. cursors for reading out coordinates of individual data points.

  66. Page layout windows present graphs, tables, text annotation, and pictures.
  67. Fonts, type sizes, and styles can be mixed in axis labels and annotation.

  69. Drawing tools can be used add callouts to your graphs (using screen or
  70. data coordinates) and to page layouts.

  72. Analysis capabilities include Fourier transforms, linear, and non-linear
  73. curve fitting to built-in and user-defined functions of an unlimited
  74. number of parameters, histograms, integration, differentiation,
  75. convolution, correlation, smoothing, mathematical expression evaluation,
  76. matrix operations, signal measurement, contouring of sparse or matrix
  77. data, image filtering, and false-color displays.

  79. The built-in Notebook editor is a full-featured word processor that you
  80. can use to combine text and graphics. IGOR Pro graphics in notebooks can be
  81. set to dynamically update, and System 7's Publish and Subscribe is supported.

  83. IGOR Pro includes a structured programming language that allows automation
  84. of importing, file I/O, analysis, data acquisition, graphing, drawing,
  85. printing, and just about anything you can think of. You can add menus to
  86. the program and create control panels containing buttons, checkboxes,
  87. popup menus, and other controls to set parameters or display results.

  89. IGOR Pro ships with numerious examples illustrating (among other things)
  90. peak fitting, signal processing, data acquisition, test automation, and
  91. graphing techniques.

  93. IGOR Pro is extensible by C programmers using the optional IGOR XOP Toolkit.

  95. XOPs supplied with IGOR Pro provide serial port and GPIB (IEEE 488)
  96. communications, importation of text, general binary, Excel, JCAMP,
  97. and MatLab data files, loading of HDF, TIFF, and PICT files, slicing
  98. of 3D data, sound input and output, surface and wireframe plots for
  99. visualization, and lots more!

  101. With the optional NIDAQ Tools, IGOR Pro can also directly acquire analog
  102. and digital signals from internal National Instruments Lab-NB,
  103. Lab-LC, and NB-MIO-16 boards.

  106. an AppleScript program to control other programs.

  113. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  114. -------------------
  115. IGOR Pro 3.0 runs on any Macintosh with a 68020 or better CPU, a hard disk
  116. and 4 MB memory or more and running System 7 or later.

  118. Macintoshes with 68020 or better CPU, math coprocessor, 8MB memory are
  119. recommended.
  120.  
  121. IGOR Pro is accelerated for Power Macintoshes (8MB memory recommended).

  123. INSTALLING IGOR PRO FROM DOWNLOADED FILES
  124. -----------------------------------------
  125. The IGOR Pro Demo is divided into parts for downloading.
  126. Normally you will need only one of the three application files.
  127. We strongly recommend you also download the help file
  128. AND the examples file:

  150.      about statistics x-test, digital signal processing, peak measurement
  151.      and fitting, ternary graphs, complex arithmetic, and a batch file
  152.      demonstration experiment. We have more than are included in this
  153.      archive; others can be retrieved from our FTP sites.

  155. After downloading, uncompress the files with something like
  156. Stuffit 3.0, or StuffIt Expander. You will then have one folder
  157. named "Igor Pro Folder", and other folders named something like
  158. "1 PutContentsIn Igor Pro Folder", "2 PutContentsIn Igor Pro Folder", etc.
  159.  
  160. Copy the CONTENTS of the folders named "1 PutContentsIn Igor Pro Folder",
  161. "2 PutContentsIn Igor Pro Folder", etc, into "Igor Pro Folder".
  162.  
  163. Trash the now-empty folders.
  164.  
  165. INSTALLING IGOR PRO FROM FLOPPY DISKS
  166. -----------------------------------------
  167. Turn off virus protection.
  168.  
  169. Double-click the "IGOR Pro Demo Installer" file on "Disk 1".
  170.  
  171. Further installation instructions appear in the installer window.
  172. Note that the installer will only ask for those disks that are
  173. actually needed for the given set of files to be installed.
  174. Even if you perform a complete installation, only one of the
  175. two types of IGOR Pro will be installed, so one disk may be
  176. skipped.
  177.  
  178. AFTER INSTALLING
  179. ----------------
  180. In the Finder, double-click the "Igor Pro Folder" icon. This will
  181. ensure that the Finder recognizes that Igor Pro was installed.
  182.  
  183. Close and drag the "Igor Pro Folder" to the desired place on your
  184. disk.
  185.  
  186. If you are installing on a Power Macintosh running old system
  187. software, you may need to drag the contents of the "Power Mac
  188. Sys. Extensions" folder into your System’s Extensions folder.
  189. If you are running System 7.5, update 1.0, or later, you already have
  190. up-to-date versions of these files and do not need to install them.
  191.  
  192. IMPORTANT KNOWN CONFLICTS
  193. -------------------------
  194. A number of problems have been reported in the Apple Menu Options
  195. (A.M.O.) extension that comes with System 7.5. These problems include
  196. crashes and menus disappearing from the menu bar. They have been
  197. reported for Igor Pro as well as other programs. However, many
  198. people run A.M.O. with no trouble. If you experience erratic behavior
  199. try running with A.M.O off. The latest A.M.O. may cure these problems.
  200.  
  201. Now Utilities' "WYSIWYG Menus" is known to make Igor Pro crash.
  202. To prevent this, use the WYSIWYG Menus control panel to stop WYSIWYG
  203. Menus from running with Igor Pro.
  204.  
  205. Adobe Type Reunion 1.2 is known to conflict with Igor Pro. Until we
  206. can determine the cause of this conflict, you will need to disable Adobe
  207. Type Reunion.
  208.  
  209. See the Igor Pro "Known Problems" help file in the "More Help
  210. Files" folder for information on other, less dire conflicts and
  211. problems.
  212.  
  213. GETTING STARTED WITH IGOR PRO
  214. -----------------------------
  215. We strongly recommend that you take the "Guided Tour of IGOR".
  216. It will get you off on the right foot and will save you a lot of
  217. time in the long run. Besides, it's fun!
  218.  
  219. Start the tour by selecting 'Help Browser' from the 'Windows'
  220. menu, and double-clicking "4. Guided Tour of IGOR Pro" in the
  221. 'Help Topics' list.
  222.  
  223. Later, to get a feel for what IGOR Pro can do, double-click some
  224. of the files in the "Examples" folder.
  225.  
  226. IGOR Pro has extensive and informative balloon help for System 7
  227. users. We know that most people think balloon help is useless.
  228. This is not the case in IGOR Pro for two reasons:
  229.      1) We spent a lot of time writing meaningful balloon help.
  230.      2) IGOR Pro provides a quick way to turn balloon help on.
  231.          Press and hold the command, option and shift keys.
  232.  
  233.   Also check out the "Help Browser". Choose "Help Browser"
  234.   in the 'Windows' menu.
